All About Weymouth and South Dorset
Weymouth is a traditional seaside resort on the south Dorset coast that has moved with the times yet still retains all the charm of it’s rich history.
The beach is superb and consists of sand which sweeps around the bay changing to shingle along the extended promenade. All the usual facilities are on hand, Punch & Judy, swing boats, trampolines, volleyball court and Weymouth’s famous sand modeller.
As one would expect of a coastal resort, water sports feature prominently in the list of activities. The sailing facilities in particular rank amongst the best in the word. So much so that in 2012 Weymouth and Portland played host to the Sailing Events of The London 2012 Olympic Games! With excellent wind conditions all year round the waters of Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour are a Mecca for windsurfers, kite surfers and recreational dingy sailors. Operating from Weymouth Old Harbour is a fleet of charter boats catering for the needs of divers who come to the area to explore the wrecks lying around the coast. Weymouth is also one of the top angling venues in the country offering all types of fishing, from the child’s rod dangled from the pier to deep sea fishing trips which can be booked from one of the charter boats in the harbour. You’ll find these boats have very experienced crews with lots of local knowledge and will take you to all the best locations for a very productive day.
Over the past few years there has been a huge growth in other activities on offer in the area, fuelled by the beautiful surrounding countryside and majestic World Heritage Jurassic on which Weymouth is located about as centrally as you can get. Golf, cycling, walking, bowling, swimming, rock climbing, the list of opportunity for sport is endless.
Many events take place throughout the year which are well worth planning your visit around. These range from Weymouth Carnival to The Dorset Seafood Festival and The Spirit of the Sea Maritime Festival to Beach MotoX when the beach comes alive to the roar of 100?s of high powered MotoX bikes, an amazing free event definitely not to be missed.
Weymouth Pavilion Theatre at the harbour end of The Esplanade offers a full fun packed programme of shows throughout the year and many other local groups put on cultural events throughout the year.
For lovers of open spaces and the countryside Weymouth is just perfect. The town has two RSPB Nature Reserves both within walking distance of The Molyneux which are both meccas for bird watchers with many rare species regularly being sighted.
Attractions this year will include an amazing 100 metre observation tower that will be sited next to the Pavilion Theatre with views towards the Olympic Sailing courses and Jurassic Coat. The Sea Life Park’s themed marine displays reveal the fascinating habitats found beneath the waves and at Sharky’s children can jump, swing, slide and climb in the adventure play zone while adults enjoy a coffee or glass of wine watching the hustle and bustle of the harbourside from the pavement cafe outside. At Lodmoor Country Park the town now has a new attraction Sandworld, an international exhibition of truly awesum sand sculpture.
With a new shopping centre, lots of excellent places to eat and drink, a wide choice of accommodation and a year-round calendar of events it is little wonder that Weymouth is a town to which people return time and time again.
